CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Yoyo
CANON: Jet Set Radio Future
CANON REFERENCE: Wikia and Wikipedia.
AGE: Sixteen
GENDER: Male
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: High School 2

APPEARANCE: Who da man?
PERSONALITY: DJ Professor K describes Yoyo as "a guy who'll blow your mind with his silver tongue." It might surprise one to learn that even despite his rude manners, Yoyo's a surprisingly good speaker; while he's not necessarily charismatic, it's very easy for him to talk to people and make conversation, even despite his horrible manners. He's a habitual liar, and will lie about where he's been what he's up to, really anything and everything. Not all the time, but often enough. He never means it with malicious intent, though he will definitely lie through his teeth if the truth will potentially get him in trouble (unless it' something he wants to gloat about). He'll make up stories to mess with other people, and he's done it so much and has just enough charisma that it basically comes naturally, and it's hard to tell if he's lying or telling the truth unless you're a human lie detector.

He's a cocky little kid, and fairly selfish, though not horribly self-centered. He did actually want to stop Rokkaku because Rokkaku was threatening people, after all, and was scared that the other GGs would get in trouble for him getting kidnapped by the Rhinos. He's got self-confidence enough for any average high school classroom, and half the time has the skills to back it up. Even though the rest of the GGs call him "fresh meat," he is a pretty skilled skater-- not the most skilled, but much more than just decent, and it's come with a lot of practice. And he's actually got a lot of creativity and artistic talent. Just, the creativity ends up being channeled into pranks, flashy moves, and silly lies. Yeah, he's not the most focused kid out there. But he does have a lot of innate talent when it comes to art, he just...doesn't get the philosophical side that a lot of other Rudies pertain to. He does art because he's good at it, and because it's fun, and he doesn't really add a lot of depth. He's not a person that's very inclined for deep thought, and academically speaking, he'd be the kid that sits in the back, falls asleep during the lecture, and then ditches detention. They're far too boring and to him they're pointless. He's got a hedonistic attitude, so things that aren't fun don't interest him at all, and he usually requires instant gratification or else he won't want to do anything.

They don't call them Rudies for nothing, and Yoyo may be one of the most impolite and undisciplined little mutant out there. He has a complete disrespect for authority, and most basic manners he never actually learned directly, only by observation. What's more, he doesn't really care if he annoys people-- and boy does he annoy people. His lack of manners and his ridiculous ego assure it. But he takes the desire for freedom to an extreme, and doesn't really know life with structure and restriction-- actually, it's something he was only introduced to recently, and he really doesn't like it! He's permanently stuck in the rebellious teenager stage of life, and sometimes does stupid, dangerous or illegal things just to be contradictory. Sometimes he'll go out of his way to cause trouble, and takes a sadistic glee in watching people flail about in frustration or confusion. He's often thoughtless when it comes to other people, even those he knows and is actually friendly with.

He's excitable and almost hyperactive (he's got a lot of pent up energy, OK). His lifestyle and the way he uses his powers show him as a bit of an adrenaline junkie, so when you put that with being a total show-off, he's ridiculously impulsive. At the same time though, he's also kind of a coward-- and when he actually thinks about stuff, yeah he kind of freaks himself out and gets scared about some things. Which is one reason why he acts without thinking; if he just goes with the first idea in his head, he won't have time to dwell on how dangerous something is or how dumb his idea may be. He never thinks about the future, whether it's that afternoon or the next ten years, and is basically stuck in a childish mentality of "never gonna grow up, let's have fun!"

Though he's not academically inclined at all (really he's horrible at retaining facts and information like that, and has horrible focus for books and lectures), he's much more people-smart. When he puts his mind to it, he can be pretty good at deceiving people, he just... never puts his mind to it. But despite his loudmouth, he's actually good at weaving around in a crowd and listening to peoples' conversations in passing, good at picking up on gossip and usually in tune with what the current situation of the city is.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Soul of the Streets:Tokyo-to is a unique environment, in that something in the air or the water or the gene pool has led to a unique, shared mutation that all of the Rudies in city have. It's become known to them as the "Soul of the Streets," which allows them to see and access the collective psyche of their city. No one knows exactly how it works, but it usually manifests in certain physical objects and the graffiti that they're known for.

The most basic way for it to show themselves to them is through spray cans that seem to be just randomly lying around the city. Those with this mutation can take the spray cans and well, spray paint-- not of any particular color though. The color that comes out is whatever the person using it imagines, allowing them to produce intricate and dynamic designs in mere seconds. One spray can isn't unlimited, though the amount that they can find littered around very nearly is, but it takes five or ten to pull off a big design, and the property of the paint is customizable if a Rudie is particularly skilled. This is all basically pointless though, because Yoyo will be unable to access the soul that the Institute is connected to; maybe with time, but certainly not now. And hopefully not ever, for the Janitor's sake.

Gravity Manipulation: By far the one Yoyo actually knows something about and how to use, he can change the gravity of himself or objects he's touching (though he's way better at using it on himself). He can shift the center of gravity and concentrate it in one area of his body, which helps him for doing acrobatics and literally throwing his weight around for complicated spins and maneuvers and increasing his jumping power. Best to stay out of the way though, because with the gravity shift, the landing is sure to be more brutal if he doesn't right it in time.

He can also compress or decrease gravity, making himself or other objects light as a feather or weigh over one thousand tons at the drop of a hat. With enough jumping power he can almost fly in a lighter state, though that leaves risks of drifting or getting hurt in free fall. He has a very loose grasp on the concept of gravitational fields, but if he tried anything too complicated, he'd end up making a black hole to accidentally swallow up his bedroom. Sometimes he looses control of it anyway, jerking off to the side out of nowhere and completely veering off course when he's skating due to shifting his gravity to his left foot.

Friction Manipulation: Simply put, the ability to control the force of friction. He can increase fiction, and stop something moving at 60 miles per hour in five seconds, or he can decrease it to make a surface almost smooth as ice, and go from 0 back up to 60 in another five seconds. This also lets him make his body parts or objects sticky or slippery, allowing him to cling to things easily or slide on through.

He's not very good at controlling this one past using it to quickly accelerate his skates though, and has quite a few combustion problems from increasing friction too much for too long and too quickly. So hey, if anyone needs a quick fire and no pyrokinesis, he's got you covered! Plus, most of the sticking-to-things benefits are lost on him since his arm muscles are about as strong as you'd expect from a scrawny Japanese teenager. Since he loses control of this one easier, he'll sometimes screw up and make it look like he's tripping over air, or his skate will slide too easily and he'll fall easily. Or he'll touch something and end up sliding off because he didn't realize he completely decreased his friction.

Beyond his mutant abilities, all his time skating and doing ridiculous stunts have given him strong leg muscles and kept him very physically fit. He also gives off the image of having above average stamina, no doubt because of his frequent use of his powers to make things easier. His coordination is also impressive (even if it doesn't seem like it due to his sloppy control) and pain tolerance, given how many times he's taken horrible spills.

AU HISTORY: Even if he hadn't born as a "freak of nature" (quoth directly from his father), Yoyo's parents weren't what you'd call, "present." Born in Japan, his father was a successful businessman and his mother was a housewife. But the young Yoyo thought that was all incredibly dull, and didn't want to be the prim and proper son they wanted, and wanted to play on the streets with his strange abilities instead; abilities that his father said weren't real, and that he needed to stop making stuff up. Other than that though (or maybe, because of his insistence of these abilities), they didn't pay him very much mind. They weren't neglectful per se, but other than giving him food and money, they pay him much mind. Which honestly, was fine with him!

Instead of staying at home with them, Yoyo spent most of his time outdoors, to the point where he practically grew up on the city streets since he was so rarely at home. From a young age, he made friends with a handful of other mutant kids who lived on the streets. His parents would've absolutely disapproved of this behavior, if it wasn't for the fact that they didn't realize it was happening. It got to the point where Yoyo was not only so misbehaved, but so out of control of his powers that his parents not only expected, but encouraged most of Yoyo's sneaking out in the middle of the day or the night, and not returning for days, so he wouldn't embarrass them or cause them trouble (He picked up a stray dog on the streets to bring home with his once, and his parents never even noticed!) He did..."dutifully" attend school, which is to say he showed up for attendance and sometimes stayed in class, but often times he would be out of the window by lunch time.

One day, he simply left with a handful of his possession and his dog Potts, and just didn't go home. His parents never cared to look for him, and he never cared to get back in contact with them. Instead, he ran (or, skated) away, and officially joined up with a street gang of other mutant kids. Each of them had a variety of abilities, but all of them also had a strange, shared mutation that they called "The Soul of the Streets." They all bonded over this and their ideas of absolute freedom and distaste for authority, considering themselves outcasts from the rest of society and embraced it. Their devil may care attitude eventually developed into them being dubbed "Rudies" due to their rude behavior, and multiple gangs of them sprouting up all over Japan.

The gang of Rudies Yoyo joined was called the GGs-- the Graffiti Gangsters-- and fought for territory against other gangs, all exploiting their mutant powers. They were basically homeless (some truly were, while others had homes but never actually went home), living together in an abandoned part of the city dubbed "The Garagae." Together, they defaced public property and generally caused havoc in the populace; they were plenty of trouble, but they never actually hurt anyone other than a few bruises and scraped knees. Hanging out with other mutant kids and exploiting his abilities so much didn't mean at all that Yoyo learned to control them though; and because he just kept using them haphazardly to win races, skate on rooftops, and all that good stuff, they got stronger, but a bit more...chaotic. The community of mutant kids were united under the flagship of an underground radio station called Jet Set Radio, pioneered by a man called DJ Professor K. It's unknown if he's a mutant or a sympathizer, but he tapped into the police waves and not only broadcast good music, but also alerted Rudies to police activity.

When Yoyo was 14, the Rudie gangs in Tokyo eventually came under fire by the Rokkaku Police Force, led by a man named Hayashi. They were the local police department, funded (see: bought out) by a man named Rokkaku Gouji--a powerful anti-mutant CEO who was trying to worm his way into City Hall-- who on the outside made the police to protect the populace from rise in crime. In practice, though they spent a lot of their time protecting the streets of Japan, a lot of people knew they had a bias against loose mutants. The GGs in particular used their abilities to stop them (to the point where they started calling in military tactics to try and stop them, but got Hayashi fired), until eventually Rokkaku called in an underground gang of assassins who employed themselves by hunting down both good and bad mutants; the Golden Rhinos. The group of assassins was far more ruthless than the police force, and threatened both the mutant Rudies and the normal populace in their hunt.

Yoyo took it upon himself to investigate another Rudie gang called the Noise Tanks, who were basically just what you'd think they are; not mutants nor normal humans, but robots, that other gangs suspected had ties to the Rokkaku Police Force. He ran (or, skated) off and separated from the rest of the GGs to look into it himself, which...kind of ended up in him getting kidnapped by the Golden Rhinos. They took him to an abandoned, underground apartment complex and rigged it with bombs, with the intent of luring the rest of his gang there and then blowing the place sky high. The Golden Rhinos' technology was way more sophisticated than the Rokkaku Police ever had access to though, so he wasn't able to break out himself. In fact, he was darn sure he was about to die in a horrible, burning explosion, but thanks to Beat-- another member of his gang-- showing up to deactivate the bombs and beat back the Rhinos, they managed to make it out of their without a terrible, fiery death.

Turns out, while Yoyo was gone, Rokkaku made a robotic replica of Yoyo himself that joined the Noise Tanks, and went around kidnapping other mutant kids and generally messing up everything for the Rudies later. Apparently, Rokkaku decided that advanced-bordering-on-illegal technology was a fair compensation to combat the mutant threat. With the GGs defeating both the Rokkaku Police and the Golden Rhinos, Rokkaku took matters into his own hands, and made robotic replicas of Beat to ruin his reputation and cause more harm to both the populace and the other Rudies. The GGs confronted Rokkaku in the downtown area, defeating the replicas-- known as "Zero Beats,"-- and defeating Rokkaku in his own robotic shell.

While they stopped Rokkaku from hurting normal people, that still meant there were dangerously chaotic mutant children running around Japan causing trouble for the hell of it. The incident with Rokkaku and the Golden Rhinos brought the mutant situation with the Rudies to outside attention. Because of the kidnapping and borderline hostage situation, Yoyo was taken into protective custody by a less corrupted police force. And, also arrested for all the vandalism, and maybe just for being a mutant and gross abuse of his powers, it's hard to tell and Yoyo didn't really pay attention. The point is, he was taken away from the GGs and into the custody of authority. They tried contacting his parents, but they either completely ignored the calls, or had otherwise disappeared. Either way, there were no parents to claim the kid (only fourteen years of age at the time), so for a long time he got sort of stuck in the system, bouncing somewhere between government custody and incarceration.

Unsure what to do with him for multiple reasons, Yoyo's case worked was finally contacted by the Xavier Institute of Higher Learning a couple years after the Rokkaku incident, and offered to take him off their hands. Left with little choice and eager to get away from the stuffy government suits, Yoyo accepted the offer and transferred to the Institute as a High School Sophomore (despite the fact that it's been years since he's had proper schooling).
